Education and Training

The successful introduction and maintenance of a Waste Minimisation Program will require development of a company training scheme that has four distinct educational and training streams. They have the following objectives:

  • Waste Appreciation; with the objective of raising awareness of the commercial, environmental and social costs of waste and to demonstrate to members of the company its management's commitment to improving company waste management performance.

  • Waste Assessment Techniques; so that all company members become involved, on a progressive basis, in some waste assessment activities and the use of waste assessment techniques. This will reinforce the Appreciation training and further demonstrate management commitment.

  • Waste Improvement Techniques; to equip waste improvement teams to examine and improve selected waste improvement projects. As with waste assessment, it should be the objective of management that all company members become involved, on a progressive basis.

  • Waste Improvement Implementation; which will be specific to operational teams working in an activity that has been analysed and a new, waste minimisation process approved. Training in new methods, machinery and waste monitoring will need to be designed and applied to each seperate case. The new methods should be incorporated in any manuals of Operating Procedures for ISO 9000 or ISO 14001 certification.
