Microtechnology
Introduction
Somewhere between everyday macromachines and the dreamed about nanomachines
are MICROMACHINES. Ranging in size from bacterial proportions to pencil-leads,
micromachines are starting to take off in the research world.
Microtechnology is regarded as one of the key technologies of the 21st
century that will decisively influence the progress in areas such as
automotive, space, medical, telecommunications or biotechnological industries,
to name only the most obvious.
Microtechnology is no vision of the future: whether read-write-heads
for computer hard disks, inertia sensors for the release of airbags
in an emergency situation or fibre optics in modern data- and telecommunications
in the range of applied microsystems in our immediate surroundings is
already large and will continue to grow considerably in the years to
come.
