Drive Thru Recycling Centre - Western Sydney Waste Board

The Western Sydney Waste Board is one of eight regional waste boards established by the NSW Government to reduce solid waste to landfill. The Western Sydney Region is the third largest economy in Australia with a population of around 1.5 million people.

Their aim is to develop a strategy to massively reduce all mixed waste dumping to landfill. The main part of this is the establishment of systems and infrastructure that provide the means to use discarded materials as resources. Such a system could potentially eliminate waste and provided for the development of a new economy based upon secondary resources.

The WSWB has identified seven key infrastructure programs in the region as offering significant opportunity for business in Western Sydney,
These are:
· Pre-treatment facilities for mixed household waste
· Drive-Thru Recycling Centres
· Wood Recycling Facilities
· Food Re-Processing Facilities
· Tyre Recycling Facilities
· Electronic / Complex Scrap Recycling Facilities
· Construction and Demolition Material Recovery Facilities

The Drive-Thru Recycling Centre proposal involved the establishment of a national network of recycling centres to collect household products and return these for re-use by the manufacturing sector.

The Centres will enable householders, small businesses and local Councils to deposit a range of gods including garden clippings, white goods, dry recyclables, brown goods, clothing and hazardous materials like old batteries and unused paints. The centres will collect and re-use the material deposited or will make arrangements for their recycling.
Business opportunities from the DTRC
· The WSWB plan calls for the construction and operation of nine Drive-Thru Recycling Centres in Western Sydney
· Material collected will need to be re-processed by the recycling and resource recovery sector
· Manufacturers can access recycled materials for their products
