THE AMC MANUFACTURING INNOVATION
TECHNOLOGY ACCESS PROGRAM
BACKGROUND TO MITA
The AMC was designed as a gateway for manufacturing
enterprises to access relevant technology.
Over five years the AMC has examined many technology
transfer models.
For Australian manufacturing industry, the most
effective uptake of new technologies comes from bringing industry groups
together to identify needs and to develop their own solutions.
The AMC has tested its methodology based on industry
groups to achieve broad implementation of technologies identified as
key issues. Examples include:
AMC has taken a leadership role in regional industry
compliance with the National Packaging Covenant
Developing a Waste Management Manual that addresses the needs of several
industries (food, metals, timber products)
Working with a Pharmaceutical industry group to identify common supply
needs and thus to reduce packaging costs
The AMC has identified a need for developing
an ongoing strategy for disseminating awareness and use of its methodology
throughout Australian industry.
the proposed outcome from the proposed AMC project
should produce lasting improvements to a large number of manufacturing
industry participants, who are currently impeded in their access to
and use of innovation technology.
MITA MEETS SME INNOVATION NEEDS
MITA is the information and tools collated and
selected from the wide-ranging AMC sources brought together to form
a framework for manufacturing industry change
MITA creates the toolbox for AMC MITA facilitators
to take to regions and to industry sector groups across Australia to
achieve innovation, technology uptake and change.
MITA is different from what is already available
because:
- It is focused on Australian manufacturer groups
- It is facilitated by the AMC network of manufacturing industry specialists
- professionals who are experienced and highly skilled and "speak
the language" of manufacturers in Australia
- It contains the improvements and solutions uncovered by manufacturers
themselves operating as focus groups
- The improvements are disseminated across regions, industries and supply
chains by AMC MITA facilitators
- It is dealing with industry, supply chain and regional groups not
just one company at a time
The MITA structure for a national innovation
access strategy involves three different industry groupings for which
there are identifiable innovation and technology streams.
Three groups are selected to achieve the following
objectives.
i) A Regional Access Innovation program that
will allow regional groups of industries to work together in accessing
innovative technologies that have industry-wide application or impact
on their supply chain.
ii) A Technology Access program that will examine
common innovation needs of many industries, in depth. A good example
of this common need is packaging technology.
iii) A Supply Chain Innovation program that will
illustrate how it can bring international manufacturing technology to
produce innovation within the whole industry supply chain.
The strategic involvement of three industry groupings
provides ongoing communications within the industry group and opportunities
to broaden access and involvement.
· The Manufacturing Innovation Technology Access (MITA) program
activity draws together all the experience, technology and Case Studies
from the three industry groupings into an Innovation Technology Access
system.
· Based on the results from previous applications
of its methodology the proposed MITA project should produce lasting
improvements to a large number of manufacturing industry participants,
who are currently impeded in their access to and use of innovation technology.

MITA has been funded from AusIndustry's Innovation
Access Program - Industry, which provides grants for industry-led projects
as part of its support for innovation, investment and international
competitivesness of Australian Businesses.
